10 Things to Consider When Starting a Blog

A couple of people have seen my blog and are inspired to start their own, so I hope this post will provide some insight into blogging, some tips and tricks to get you started and what you can do as a beginner. I’m not an expert by any means, but if I can help others I will, as I feel I’ve learnt enough to share some tips with others!

Deciding you want to start a blog is an awesome and exciting time, but you probably have some questions. So what should you consider?

Blog Name
Picking one is often rather hard and I’m still debating whether to change mine. Make it relevant to you, be creative and have some fun with it.

WordPress or Blogspot?
I see this question a lot on social media. I use the free version of WordPress at the moment, but choosing a platform is a personal choice. I would say to look at blogs on both platforms; WordPress or Blogspot and then start to use one of these platforms. There are so many bloggers on Twitter who use either platform, so there will definitely be someone who can answer your questions when customising your blog, and if not, you can watch youtube videos and you’ll get the hang of it eventually!

What do I talk about?
Talk about something you love! There’s nothing worse than writing what you think people want to read, but you’re not enjoying it.

Does everything have to be perfect to start with?
The simple answer is no. People want to see stuff from you, know what you’re about. Be prepared for trial and error, I still am and it’s been a while since I started blogging. Your blog will be a work in progress, but that’s okay.

Brainstorm Topics
Plan what you want to write about for your first few posts. With WordPress, you can schedule posts if you write a few at a time, and then post them when you’re busy with work, studying etc. You can decide how much of your life you want to share when you’re thinking and writing posts.

How often should I post?
This is up to you, realistically think how much spare time you have. Blogging is time-consuming, I’m not going to lie to you, you’ll soon realise this when you get started.

How do I get people to read my blog?
Tell your friends and family that you’ve started one and send them the link. Post on your social media and then if you want to, get involved in Twitter chats with other bloggers to promote your blog further.

How do you make your blog appealing?
If you’re like me, then you probably like a good photo when reading a post or article and therefore when you are writing your own posts make sure you have a think about what pictures you could use, this could be one you took a while ago or one you want to try out soon. Think about the theme when you start up a blog, most platforms have some lovely free ones to choose from!

Promoting your blog
By doing this on social media, you are reaching out to so many more people who will read your blog posts and hopefully, they’ll follow and continue to be inspired.

Be Yourself!

  1. This is such a good post for new bloggers! My name took me ages to come up with and I’m not sure I’m happy with it either but I couldn’t think of anything for a whole day and when I did it wasn’t available so when I thought of this and it was available it just kind of stuck! Having a note of all the Twitter chats would also be super handy, I always forget what I join in with on what days and I’m often left sitting on the laptop wondering if there’s something I should be doing!
